Bill Gates, believing himself to be God, to tamper with the environment.

What do you do if you are in the top ten richest people in the world? Some people retire and travel or play golf. Not Bill Gates (the founder of Microsoft and the Windows operating system.) He has taken it upon himself to play God and alter the weather by stopping the formation of hurricanes and cyclones. Hell, he already thinks he can wipe out disease and sickness so why not change the weather?

I received word in one of my tech publications about Bill Gates being involved in 5 patent applications that are designed to alter the weather:

"He once controlled the world's PCs. Now Bill Gates has set his sights on controlling the world's weather. And patenting it. On Thursday, the USPTO revealed that Gates and ex-Microsoft CTO Nathan Myhrvold have filed five patent applications that propose using large fleets of vessels to suppress hurricanes through various methods of mixing warm water from the surface of the ocean with colder water at greater depths. The idea is to decrease the surface temperature, reducing or eliminating the heat-driven condensation that fuels the giant storms. Hey, a guy can only play so much golf in retirement." (1)

If this is even attempted the results could, and most likely will, be more catastrophic than the hurricanes themselves.

If you change the temperature of the Atlantic Heat Conveyor by moving warmer water down on  pretty continual basis it will stop as it relies on a significant temperature differential to operate. This will have far reaching effects both in distance and time.

Different marine life has evolved to be abundant in different areas due to temperatures and food supplies that it finds necessary. They all rely on a constantly replenishing supply of water. This is true of life in lakes and streams. If the water supply changes or stops it can kill billions of plants and animals in the ocean.

This effect can be seen in the Pacific Northwest with the damning of the rivers for hydroelectricity and the effect that has had on the salmon population.

Now, how will this affect life on land?

  • We rely on rain for water - most of which comes from the ocean
  • Rain is not comprised solely of water - it contains minerals, organic compounds and microorganisms that help build fertility of the land
  • The moving water gets warmed near the equator and cooled at the poles helping to set up and maintain the temperature of the atmosphere allowing plants to grow
  • The plants in the ocean provide most of the oxygen air breathing animals need to survive

So if you change how the Oceanic Conveyors work, you may destroy the Oceans plant life which will destroy life on land as we know it.

Not only do we have to worry about the above concerns but we also have to worry about the the resources required to develop, construct and maintain the systems. We need to look at the cost of manpower, fuel consumption, materials used in the ships and hardware. I could easily see the costs rivaling the damage caused. The resources would be put to better use building better buildings, warning systems and evacuation systems.
