Environmentally Sustainable is Better - Save Your Food

Farmer in fieldDespite over 100,000 emails sent by Organic Consumers Association action network members to President Obama and the US Senate, Tom Vilsack was confirmed by the Senate as the Secretary of Agriculture on January 21st.

The Secretary of Agriculture is responsible for directing the U.S. Department of Agriculture and its $90 billion annual budget, including the National Organic Program, food stamp and nutrition programs, and agricultural subsidies.

While farmers, consumers and concerned citizens opposed Vilsack's nomination, he is tasked with representing all food and farming interests in the United States. President Obama has called on all Americans to take responsibility for our country and get involved. Let's take him up on it. Take action today at Democracy in Action

In order to encourage President Obama, Secretary Vilsack and the US Congress to include TRUE organic food (not this fake organic factory farm nonsense) and farming in the economic stimulus package, as well as watchdog our food system, the OCA has created USDA Watch . At OCA's USDA Watch Campaign Center you can stay informed and involved as we agitate for sustainable and organic food & farming.

Economy Got You Down? Time for an Organic Revolution!

With unemployment, food scares, and demands on food banks all up, the time is now for an organic revolution. President Obama and Congress are currently considering a massive financial stimulus package to rescue our economy. Absent from the discussion has been any reference to a sustainable and organic food system. Our economy and national security depend on relocalizing our food system, shifting away from chemically dependent industrial agriculture toward a just and organic food system.

Sound off today. Send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. We have included a form letter for your convenience. A personal letter, however, is more effective. The shorter and more concise a letter is, the more likely it will be published. Good luck!

Tell the 111th Congress: The Time for Our Organic Future is NOW

The 111th Congress took office as of January 12th, 2009, with 9 new senators and 52 new representatives. Congress and President Obama are faced with serious crises at home and abroad. Now is the time to build the foundation for a sustainable and organic future for our country.

You can share your vision for an organic future by contacting your Representative and urging them to:

  1. Join the Organic Caucus, if they have not done so yet. The Organic Caucus is a bipartisan association of United States Representatives whose mission is to "enhance availability and understanding of information related to the production and processing of organic agricultural products."
  2. Restore consumers’ right to know by publicly supporting mandatory labeling of Genetically Engineered foods, with regulations similar to those now in place in Europe, Japan, and other nations.
  3. Expand incentives for small and mid-sized organic farms and for farmers and ranchers who wish to make the transition to organic. The organic sector currently represents at least three percent of our current food purchases, therefore it deserves at least three percent of USDA program funds and incentives.

For maximum impact, PLEASE CUSTOMIZE YOUR EMAIL! For added effect, call your Representative to follow-up.
