Environmental Mandates Do Not Make A Difference. Right.
January 1, 2009 by Curt Siters
Right after the planes were grounded after the World Trade Center was destroyed on 9/11 an amazing thing happened - the skies began to turn a deeper shade of blue like I remember from my childhood. Leading up to the Olympics in Beijing there was great concern over the level of pollution and how it would affect the athletes.
Today, I took our dog for his morning walk and noticed how quiet it was and how blue the skies were. We currently live just a few miles from the Asheville airport and I didn't see or hear any planes. I couldn't see any contrails or chemtrails -it is a beautiful day. When I checked my email there was a technology email newsletter I subscribe to with a section on NASA and Beijing pollution.
Several weeks before the Olympics began China instituted very strict regulations to reduce the amount of pollution in the city. From the news reports and pictures I've seen Beijing has a serious airborne pollutant problem and NASA has released some images of how the pollution level changed during that period. I was amazed at the NASA images so I decided to find some before and during pictures to get an idea of how great an effect the mandates had.
The first two images are before. The first image shows nitrogen dioxide, a toxic reddish-brown gas or yellow liquid, levels before the games. The picture with it shows, most likely, just how bad the visibility can get in Beijing.
These next two are from the weeks of the Olympics and show a marked decrease in the Nitrogen Dioxide levels and blue skies.
I believe both of the pictures are taken in the same area and that the building in the background is the same - although it is hard to tell with all the smog in the first picture.
So this should make it apparent to you that one city can, in a couple of weeks, drastically improve the air quality for its citizens. Can you imagine what could be accomplished, not only with air pollution, but all the other forms of pollution as well, if we - meaning everyone - just took a month to reduce our contribution?
By the way - the Beijing residents want Olympic the pollution limits kept in place.
